Michigan’s Longest Garage Sale – US 12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale
In 1825, the U.S. government appropriated $3,000 for the nation’s second federal highway: US-12, to be laid out along an ancient Indian trail that spanned Southern Michigan. Along US-12, a legacy of structures, artifacts, and landscapes remains, reflecting the lives of the region’s travelers and inhabitants. For a very readable and comprehensive history of the towns, villages, and businesses along US-12 read Michigan’s US-12 Heritage Trail: America’s Second Federal Highway, by Gladys Saborio and Susan Kosky. (Available on Amazon) Today, US-12 is the site of Michigan’s Longest Garage Sale. If you love to shop and love searching for hidden treasures and finding great bargains, this is sale and trip for you! You will find everything from antiques, collectibles, furniture, dishware, fresh garden produce, homemade jams and jellies, live entertainment, and much more. Perhaps even more interesting than the “junk” are the people you will meet along the drive. The sales can be found along the highway at homes, farms, businesses, parking lots, and fields. Some areas will have large numbers of vendors while others may be scattered and in some instances, a traveler will have to go several miles or more without seeing a yard sale because of the rural nature of the highway. Host a garage sale along the US 12 Heritage Trail – Website The Garage Sale Map will be online a few days prior to the sale to highlight the homes that have mapped their sales.
